Building Culture and Community
In the past couple of years, Hinckley-Big Rock High School has started participating in a new mentoring program. We call this program “The Harbor”. The Harbor is a way for smaller groups of students to be able to connect with both student mentors and teacher mentors. These mentors are given the responsibility to look out for their group members. Every time there is a meeting, a video about a specific topic is played for the viewing of all the groups. This topic typically is one that all the mentors and teachers can agree needs to be addressed in the school.

I have had the pleasure of being on both sides of the group. Last year I was in a group mentored by two very nice upperclassmen who always brought positivity to our group. This year, I was honored to become a mentor in the program. I have a very good group that I am able to meet with, and I am extremely thankful for all of them. I’ve grown closer to many of them, partially due to this new opportunity. I am not only able to help them through issues in their lives, but I am also able to learn new things from them all the time. They have new ideas and perspectives on topics, and they view them in ways I never would have thought of. This has helped me understand how others think and how I can continue to grow as a person. I can’t wait to see how this program will change not only me, but also all the other people being influenced by this new opportunity.
