Crown Cafe

Hinckley-Big Rock High School is excited to announce the opening of the Crown Cafe, a student-run coffee service!

The Crown Cafe is operated by students participating in our Transition Program, directed by Jessica Wright, giving them hands-on, real-world experience in a supportive and inclusive environment. Students and staff can now order coffee prepared by our students, creating daily moments of connection while empowering our students to practice skills that extend far beyond the classroom. The Cafe is open every Tuesday and Thursday morning from 8:00 am to 8:40 am.

Learning Through Real-World Experience

By running the Crown Cafe, our students are developing essential soft skills that prepare them for their next steps. These include:

  • Communication skills – greeting customers, taking orders, and responding to questions politely and clearly

  • Teamwork and collaboration – working together to prepare drinks, manage tasks, and support one another

  • Time management – following schedules, prioritizing tasks, and working efficiently during service times

  • Responsibility and accountability – showing up prepared, completing assigned roles, and taking pride in their work

  • Problem-solving – handling unexpected situations, such as order changes or supply needs

  • Customer service skills – practicing professionalism, patience, and positive interactions

  • Confidence and self-advocacy – building self-esteem by contributing meaningful work to the school community

These authentic experiences allow students to apply what they’ve learned in a practical setting, reinforcing independence and personal growth.

Strengthening Our School Culture

The Crown Cafe is more than a coffee stop, it’s a reflection of who we are as a school. This initiative is helping to build a stronger, more connected culture by:

  • Promoting inclusion and belonging – highlighting the talents and contributions of all students

  • Encouraging empathy and understanding – fostering meaningful interactions between students and staff

  • Creating shared experiences – giving the school community a daily opportunity to connect and support one another

  • Celebrating student success – showcasing skills, growth, and achievements beyond academics

  • Building pride in our school – reinforcing values of respect, collaboration, and community support

Every cup served at the Crown Café represents learning, confidence, and connection. We are incredibly proud of our students for their hard work and dedication!
