Here at Hinckley- Big Rock Elementary School, one of the most anticipated and loved events is the Big Rock Plowing Match. The event brings together our communities, offering a huge variety of activities such as a watermelon eating contest, the famous bike parade, live music, BINGO, of course the plowing, and one of our favorites- art! Our HBRES students love creating art that is proudly displayed at the Plowing Match. Each grade level creates projects for display in the School Exhibit Building for the Junior Fair. It is an incredible sight to walk into and see literally hundreds of pieces of artwork done by our students.
This year, with the addition of art as one of our ES classes, Ms. Zill (our art teacher) is allowing students to use their creativity to design projects from drawing to sculpture to photography. These entries at the Junior Fair will be part of the contest per age group with prizes awarded for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
In addition to our Plowing Match art, we also recently completed an incredible wet felting project with Natasha from Esther’s Place Fiber Arts. Natasha worked with each class, from early childhood to 5th grade, so that every student had a part in making our masterpiece. The final result is a beautiful farm scene which celebrates our agricultural- rich community. Our students were so engaged and loved this school-wide art project.
Learning comes in many forms~ we are so delighted to give students a creative outlet to create art that they can proudly share with our communities. Their pride in their pieces develops their own self- confidence and engagement in learning. Be sure to ask your student what they are working on- give them some time at home to create too! We hope that everyone will join us at the Big Rock Plowing Match this year (September 20- 22) … and that you will make visiting the School Exhibit Building and Junior Fair a highlight of your weekend. You are also invited to stop by the elementary school office to see our felt showpiece!
