February 7th - Elementary School Staff

One School, One Book at HBRES

HBRES's very own Humphrey
The World According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney

Hinckley-Big Rock Elementary School was so excited to have our first ever all-school book club called One School, One Book! Every family received the same book -- Betty G. Birney’s The World According to Humphrey -- and our families were asked to read it together at home over the next few weeks. We love that our families have been making time so they can participate in this special activity.

Check out this awesome video of what it’s all about!

Reading aloud at home is valuable because it prepares your child to be an effective reader, and it is also a fun and worthwhile family activity. The purpose of the One School, One Book program is to build a “Community of Readers” at our school. Everyone -- students, parents, and teachers will all be following along together.

Check out our Padlet! This is a fun place for our families to communicate and share all their adventures reading Humphrey.

The idea of the program is that children of all grade levels will be listening to their parents read the same book. Strange or daring as it may seem, it actually makes sound educational sense. Reading professionals recommend reading material aloud that is beyond a child’s own reading level. We also believe that you can and should continue reading chapter books with your older children, even when they are able to read by themselves. The title that was selected can be followed, understood, and enjoyed by younger students, but will still captivate and stimulate older children.

What does this look like at school?

Everyday we have a special teacher as a guest reader! They read a chapter and then it is posted to our website and our Facebook page for families to enjoy! We also have trivia questions on the morning announcements and everyday a classroom is selected to have our own “live” school hamster named Humphrey learn in their classrooms. The children have enjoyed watching Humphrey roll around in his ball in their classroom. We have been having so much fun coming together to enjoy this book as a school community!

We will also be inviting parents, students, and teachers to come to school at the conclusion of the book for a “Reading Celebration”. There will be many activities that everyone can participate in together. The Reading Celebration will be on Monday, February 24th from 6:30-7:30.

We hope you enjoyed reading about all the fun we have been having with our book, “The World According to Humphrey”.
