January 31st - High School Student

Wonder Day

Today HBR students came ready to explore their interests. Every student had the opportunity to wonder about something that is interesting to them. The first part of the day was when the students prepared their recipes, inventions, or research to begin their wonder day project. The variety of projects today stems from: sports, cosmetology, sewing, cooking, and even using a 3-D printer. The creativity never ends.

After students finished researching they started their projects. Many made presentations based off of the research they conducted. They then shared this at the end of the day with their fellow students.

In the foods room, Tessa Prellberg and Maria Cornilla created 3 delicious mac and cheese recipes.

Dylan was interviewed from the science wing on his wonder day project.

Why did you choose this project?

I chose my wonder day project so I could have the time to actually build the back of a TV remote case.

What was the most challenging part of today?

Probably setting it all up. Building the case won’t take that long but the most difficult challenge will be once it's done printing, if it doesn't fit, I'm going to have to spend another 3 hours waiting till the next one prints.”

Also in the science wing, Carina spent her wonder day learning how to sew. She created some scrunchies, and a nice blanket for at home.

Joleigh Cronin spent her day learning and practicing new makeup looks.

Why did you choose your Wonder Day project?

“I chose my Wonder day project because I am very challenged at doing makeup so I wanted to get better because I wear make-up everyday so getting better will help me for bigger events.”

What was the most challenging part of the day?

“My most challenging part of the day was eyeshadow because it's harder to blend certain looks, and you don't know where to start with colors and where to end with colors.

What are you doing to improve on your makeup skills?

“I watched several videos and started by practicing on myself to blend my foundation better, and to blend eyeshadow looks. So looking at those videos helped me to see what I can do on myself and practice more.”

Miss Kacer was interviewed to discover a teacher's perspective on wonder day and its importance.

Why do you think Wonder day is such a significant day for the students?

“This year I got to be in a different space and have a different environment. I got to be a part of the art room it's been really cool and seeing the variety of projects that people are embarking on. We have people painting with all different kinds of paint: acrylics, watercolor, drawing, some people using computer programs, people using clay and the wheel.”

“It’s so cool how they're doing so many different types of projects and its really neat to be able to see the thought that they put into what they're doing and it's also been particularly cool in this space seeing people go from person to person and kind of support them and give them feedback and ask them about their projects.”

“For example, I get to see students who haven't really worked with the wheel very much before going through trial and error with that and doing something that they wouldn't necessarily get the opportunity to do during a school day which is really neat.”

In the gym, students wondered about many things such as diet and exercise plans, how to improve skills in their favorite hobby. Keegan told us about his wonder day while in the gym.

What did you do for Wonder day?

“I shot 50 3-pointers, 100 free throws, and 100 layups on both sides. I feel like it really helped my accuracy today and that I became a better shooter overall. And I could use the information I learned today in the game to do better.”

Towards the end of the day, students finished their recipes, inventions, and overall projects that they created during the day. At 2 o’clock students met back at their 5th hour class to present and share everything they wondered about during the day. They also submitted their finally projects to google classroom to allow all students to see what they worked on during wonder day.

As can be seen, many individuals wanted to challenge themselves and see if their wonder day could be their new favorite hobby or skill. This is why wonder day is so special because it gives students a true advantage into having the time to do the things they want to do. Additionally, while they do their wonder day project they are surrounded by support from peers and teachers. Wonder day is a time where students can ask questions and enjoy learning or practicing a new skill.
