October 24th - Middle School Teacher

Learning about the Community in the Community

“We’re so lucky we get to go on trips and don’t have to do schoolwork!” Ryan C. is just one of the nine kids that are enjoying the community field trips that Mrs. Harper at the high school has been planning and implementing for the last several years. Luckily for the students in my class, we get to accompany them weekly.

The community trips are different every week – ranging from restaurants, parks, libraries, orchards, plays, and at times, just visiting each other’s classrooms at the middle school and high school. When asked about the trips we’ve taken over the last six weeks, the middle school kids were very eager to share their favorite memory from each one. And here is a test about your Friday Blog– see if you can find a reoccurring theme in each student’s response.

Danny R. enjoyed the lessons on ordering from a menu , learning how to add tax and tip to a restaurant order in Math class, and then being able to actually experience going to the Sugar Grove Cafe to put his new skills into practice – and the best part- ordering and eating food!

DaPeng F. practiced his newly acquired English words and ordered his choice like a seasoned pro!

At the Jewel in Sugar Grove, we had a tour of the different departments, sampled food AND decorated cupcakes – Matt W. thought it was “so cool to go in the back room at Jewel,” haven’t we all always wondered what’s behind those swinging doors at Jewel? Everyone took a tour of where the food is stored and cooked, which was so interesting!

Chris W. remembered every bit of food he ate in the places we’ve gone to – from the donuts, to the cupcakes, and pancakes, and he even mentioned the toast from our trip to the diner in Sugar Grove!

Matt W. was extremely impressed with the diner’s biscuits and gravy, but he also really liked racing through the corn maze at Honey Hill Orchard. They all raved about the right out of the fryer apple cider donuts at Honey Hill. Now the students are looking forward to experiencing “Beauty and The Beast” at the Paramount in January.

Making slime and using their measuring skills in Mrs. Spurgeon’s room was a cleaner project than any of us imagined it would be.

For all of the kids, taking their lessons outside of class is a rewarding technique to use their newly learned skills in real world applications. We are fortunate to be able to experience this. Oh, and hanging out with the grown-up high-schoolers is pretty cool too!

Like Ryan said, “It’s awesome to be able to take these trips and not have to do schoolwork!”

Yep, Ryan - even for us old teachers - it’s pretty awesome!
