Forever Royal: Reflections on My Years at HBR

It has been an incredible honor to serve the Hinckley-Big Rock School District for the past several years. Throughout my time as a physical education instructor(18 year), driver education (9) instructor, and athletic director(9), I have been privileged to work with countless students, families, and colleagues who have made this district a special place for me.

Over the years Hinckley-Big Rock has become my home. I cherish this district and I always will.    Among my most cherished memories are watching our 2009 and 2010  girls’ basketball teams achieve the extraordinary accomplishment of winning back-to-back state championship titles.  These moments truly captured the pride, determination, and spirit of this community.

On a personal level, I am deeply grateful that all three of my children had the opportunity to graduate from such a fantastic district. Experiencing HBR not only as an educator and athletic director, but also as a parent, has made my connection to this school and community even more meaningful. It is the faith that I have in the district and its educational staff, that allowed me to entrust my own children’s safety, care and education.

I have also shared in both the difficult and joyous times that come with a long career in education. We have navigated the loss of students and staff members, losses that deeply affected our school family. At the same time, I have been fortunate to celebrate countless milestones—watching students grow, succeed, and move on to their next chapters. It has been humbling to have also taught many former students’ children and to know that they appreciate all that this district offers as well.

All of this, in conjunction with enjoying the friendships and camaraderie of outstanding coworkers along the way, has made me feel very blessed beyond words.

One of the most humbling moments of my career came most recently with the honor of being part of the naming of the soccer field,  the “Larry Doc Pepper’s Soccer Field.” This recognition is something I will forever hold close to my heart and serves as a lasting reminder of the relationships and shared experiences that define my time at HBR.

Again, I am forever thankful for the support, trust, and encouragement I have received throughout my career. Serving the Hinckley-Big Rock School District has been one of the greatest privileges of my life, and I will always be proud to have been part of this remarkable community of wonderful people. I am also very grateful for the support of my family who, graciously stepped aside at times, while I served this district. It was selfish on my part to some degree, and I deeply appreciate their patience for letting me ‘do what I love” these past few years. I truly believe that if you “Do what you love and love what you do,  you will never work a day in your life.”  To that end I thank the district and HBR families’  for allowing me to be part of this amazing place.

In sincere appreciation,

Kim Halverson,
