First Grade’s Human Body Celebration!

First grade just wrapped up our unit on the human body—and wow, what an adventure it’s been! We’ll be honest: the first time we saw this unit on our plans, we thought it might be a little too serious for our curious six- and seven-year-olds. But it turns out, learning about what’s inside us has become one of our favorite parts of the year!

Our first graders dove right in and amazed us with what they learned. Ask them how many bones are in the human body, and they’ll tell you—206! Curious about the length of your intestines? They’ll let you know (it’s very long!). They even discovered the difference between voluntary muscles—the ones we move on purpose, like when we wave hello—and involuntary muscles, like our hearts, which keep working all on their own. And of course, they’ll happily tell you that your gluteus maximus is just a fancy name for your bottom—cue lots of giggles during that lesson!

To celebrate all their hard work, we ended the unit with our Human Body Celebration! Students rotated through ten hands-on stations where they got to show off their new knowledge and “play doctor” for the day. The excitement (and the stethoscopes!) filled our cafeteria with energy, laughter, and so much learning.

A huge thank-you to our amazing parent volunteers who helped make the day possible—cleaning up stations, guiding activities, and keeping everything running smoothly. Your time, enthusiasm, and support helped make this event such a success!

We were lucky to have some special guests join the fun! Our very own Nurse Emily ran a station where students listened to heartbeats, checked their pulses, and talked about how to keep their hearts healthy. And of course, it wouldn’t be hands-on learning without a station led by our amazing STEAM teacher, Mrs. Delisio, who always brings creativity, curiosity, and a touch of science magic to everything she does.

The day was filled with discovery, laughter, and plenty of “aha!” moments. But don’t just take our word for it—listen to what our students had to say!

“We loved putting the skeleton together. It was fun to figure out where to put all the organs and bones. I loved learning how to put the body back together.”

Maggie Fitzpatrick and Frankie Kraus

“I enjoyed the digestive system station. You got to soak the crackers up with the Sprite! I also thought taking the different organs out of the body was cool!”

Alex Johnson

“I was really excited to see my mom and dad there! I loved eating the Scooby Snack Bones. Sorting the organs was really fun too because they were squishy!”

Gabby Altosino

We’re so proud of our first graders for all their hard work and enthusiasm throughout this unit. Here’s to many more moments of learning, laughter, and wonder in first grade!
