First of all, it's an honor to write this blog about our twins, Chris and Matt. It is truly amazing to think back on the beginning of our family's experience at Hinckley-Big Rock 15 years ago. We had no way to predict what kind of an adventure it would be raising twins with special needs in a small school district like HBR. Our experience has always been quite different from others due to the extensive needs of our boys and our worries seemed endless.
From the beginning we have always felt supported by HBR, from the staff, fellow parents, community members and peers. Even though our experience wasn’t the same as others we felt included. We know this kind of personal connection to Matt and Chris would not have happened at a large school district. For that we are forever grateful.
In the past 4 years Matt and Chris have found something to call their own, Special Olympics. As parents we realized how important it was to have them be part of something in order to make connections, learn responsibility and grow individually. This is when things started to shift for them and they were trying new things at school and taking chances. Hinckley-Big Rock High School has really helped acknowledge all of their hard work in their Special Olympic sports. From having a clap out for the Winter State Games to acknowledging them at Senior night and much more, these acts of kindness have touched our hearts.
As parents we couldn’t be prouder to be a part of a school district that wholeheartedly embraces inclusion. The unwavering support and dedication of the community towards our boys fills us with immense gratitude. They have not only been accepted but celebrated for their unique abilities. It’s a testament to HBR’s commitment to creating an inclusive community. If we could do it all over again, we would choose HBR for our boys. Next stop….attending the transition program.
