The Hinckley-Big Rock Middle School student council is open to students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. To be a member of this group, students are required to complete an application and get two teacher recommendations. Some of the responsibilities of the student council include organizing school activities, planning events, and encouraging school spirit.
Hi HBR community,
My name is Gavin and I am student council co-president. So far this year it has been fun having so many people in the student council and having everyone involved. Everyone in the student council is very active and helpful. We have all enjoyed what we have done this year and hope to keep going while also helping make our school a better place.
Hi I’m Emily and I’m a co-president of the student council. For the first semester of the year, we were quite busy working on candy grams, spirit days, and bingo. Honestly, I feel great knowing we were able to accomplish so much from the beginning of the year to now. The environment of the council is quite astonishing, for their ability to continue their hard work and positive attitudes no matter the challenge. As we roll into the new year, we have some wonderful spirit days planned along with some other fun activities as well. I would like to say thank you to our sponsor Mrs. Burgh and our principal Mrs. Torman for all their help and support.
I’m Meegan, the student council’s secretary. We have done so much this year. Including fun activities within the school, as well as helping others in the community by setting up fundraisers and hopefully volunteering in the spring. I would like to thank our sponsor, Mrs. Burgh for making this all possible. I would also like to thank Mrs. Torman for approving all of our ideas and making time to meet with us when we have questions.
The student council was busy the first semester with a focus on school spirit. They organized spirit days for all of the home games, helped plan two assemblies, and created locker signs for all of our 8th grade athletes. They also planned an all school bingo game and organized two very successful candy gram sales. To motivate participation in spirit days the student council created a traveling Spirit Trophy that is awarded to the homeroom with the most participation.

The council wrapped up the semester with a food drive for the Hinckley Area Food Pantry. They created signs, posted fliers, and set goals for the collection. The food drive was a success, the council collected over 100 items, which surpassed their goal.

I have really enjoyed working with this group of students. The council is a very dedicated and motivated group with a lot of energy and a lot of ideas. I am looking forward to the events planned for the second semester. The student council’s goals for the new year are to continue to promote school spirit and to get involved in volunteer opportunities in the district and in the community.
