Possibilities and exploration
Hi! My name is Grace Barrett, and I’m a sophomore here at Hinckley- Big Rock High School. I was approached by Dr. Borne and was asked to write a little piece for the school blog, just detailing some experiences about being a sophomore. It required me to look back through the first semester of my year, and reflect on my experiences.

The beginning of my sophomore year was so much fun. Being in student council, homecoming, volleyball, leadership retreat, and more kept me busier than ever, but it’s okay because I like to stay busy! However, as everything started to wind down, the idea of college, driving, and getting a job began looming over me. College and degrees are often a topic of interest at my lunch table. And while the idea of getting my license and graduating terrifies me, I will admit a small part of me is excited. Sophomore year is very much a year of possibilities and exploration.
I have the opportunity to explore what I want to do, where I want to be, and who I want to be. It’s really cool! We got to visit IVVC, which is such a wonderful resource for people who want to go into the professions offered in the IVVC program. I’m still an underclassman, meaning I don’t have much pressure to know what I want to do yet, but I’m still given enough resources to look more into what I want to do later in life. It’s kind of a weird transition period, too. Next year, I’ll be a junior, an upperclassman, and a licensed driver. But for now, I’m just preparing for next year, so it’s a little strange being in that transitional period. Other than that, sophomore year is a lot of fun! I enjoy doing things like going to basketball games and hanging out with my friends, and I’m just trying to make as many good memories as I can before I graduate!
