February 5th - Middle School Students

 What's Happening at HBRMS

First, I want to thank all families, students, staff and teachers for a smooth transition back to in-person learning. Here is some perspective on the happenings at HBRMS on January 26th. - Mr. Strouss

Considering the issued winter storm warning, the timing of the snow, and forecasted high winds, Hinckley-Big Rock schools will be implementing a fully remote learning day on Tuesday January 26th. The focus of this learning day will be to support the social-emotional well-being of our students. Students will engage in activities planned by their teachers that limit screens and encourage interaction with peers and families. Students should log in to their learning platform for further directions from teachers. Enjoy the snow! - Dr. McGuire

So when HBRMS received word on Monday evening, all the teachers and students were ready!  Students created snow volcanoes, played in the snow, tried to see how many snowballs they could throw at their sister in a minute, and played Tic-Tac-Toe. In Language Arts they could write a poem about the snow day using figurative language, rhymes, or sensory details. Students could read a book.  Students in 8th grade used family members to check different gene traits. They also were given the choice of taking a picture of something cultural they found in their home, or challenged with creating a snow sculpture of that cultural piece. There were plenty of other activities not mentioned above.

B. Wilkening and J. Barbeau helped put together a few quotes and pictures to share.

Hope you had a great time in the snow! It was windy, but the sun was shining! You were able to make a snowman, build a snow fort, go sledding down a hill, have a snowball fight, or even make a snow angel. Some of us even made volcanoes and did experiments which were cool and unique. Others took a sled or canoe and tied it on the back of a snowmobile or gator and got pulled around. Then, there were some that had to help shovel the sidewalks, driveways, doorsteps, and put salt out on the ice so no one falls. After a fun day in the snow, you can sit down and enjoy a hot cup of hot chocolate to warm you up. We all used our imaginations and created brilliant ideas with our friends and family that can be cherished for the rest of the winter.  B. Wilkening, 8th grade, J. Barbeau, 7th grade

I don't have any pictures from what I did from my snow day! But I played in the snow with my sister and we had a snowball fight and made snow angels! And then we ended the night with watching one of my favorite movies Uncle Buck!   D. Butler 7th grade

HBR Hangouts sponsored by the Student Council with the help of Mr. Jourdan created a Google Classroom for students to "hangout" and share fun pictures of theme days. As you can see it has been a great success with connecting students across grade levels for students learning both remote and in-person. Even Mr. Edwards got involved in our "Dress like Lumberjack Day"
Yukon Joe spotted - believe it or not grew the beard in two days!

The Royal Lego Contest was also a big success. Students showed off their builds.
