March 6th - Elementary School Parent

Hinckley-Big Rock Elementary just finished our One Book, One School project. We were reading The World According to Humphrey. We even had our own Humphrey the Hamster who visited all of our classrooms.   At our final celebration, Humphrey was adopted by one of our families. Spending time in our classrooms must have helped Humphrey with his writing skills.   He submitted this blog from his new home to share with you all!

“Home” According to Humphrey

It was the worst day of my life.  I found out that I was going to a new home. The thought of leaving Mrs. Madden and all my friends at school made me sad sad sad.

After spending weeks at my home at school, I didn’t want to leave.  I was fed plenty of snacks and had so many visitors everyday.  Some people would even come to visit me when the rest of the students weren’t there.

What was this new home going to be like and who would take care of me?  Were they going to feed me snacks and play with me?  I was worried worried worried.

On Wednesday, Mrs. Madden made a phone call.  From what I could hear, it sounded like Miss Stella was going to take me home.  This made me feel good good good, but I had never met her family.  I heard Miss Stella had a cat.  EEEEEEK!

Friday came and I was brought to the gym in front of all of my friends!  Instead of my usual morning nap, I was so excited to see everyone that I ran ran ran as fast as I could on my wheel.  Mrs. Madden announced all the prizes that the students won from my book.  Then, it came time for her to announce that Miss Stella was going to take me home!

Shortly after that, a man and a little blonde girl picked me up.  I later learned that the man’s name is Hey-Dad and the little girl’s name is Whatcha-Doing-Lydia.  I hoped Whatcha-Doing-Lydia was nice.

The sad part about this was that they had to put me in a little box with holes.  I hadn’t been in this box since I left the pet store.  Whatcha-Doing-Lydia and Hey-Dad walked me down the hall. Then cold air rushed through the holes of my box and I realized it was snowing! They quickly put me in their warm car. It was a 5-minute drive to Miss Stella’s house. Scary scary scary!

Hey-Dad brought me and all of my stuff inside.  I was brought into a room with light purple walls and pink curtains.  Hey-Dad set my home up on a dresser and carefully placed me inside.  I ran into my little hidey-hole as fast as I could.  I was so tired from the day’s events, that I took a long nap nap nap.

Later on Miss Stella came home with her mom.  They were so excited to see me!  This made me feel much better.

After a few more hours of sleep, I decided it was time to wake up and start my nightly routine of grooming, eating, running on my wheel, and tidying the place up.  I was quite hungry.  Miss Stella even gave me my favorite treat - a yogie.
Snacks with Stella make things better

Miss Stella, Whatcha-Doing-Lydia, Hey-Dad and Stella’s mom, who I learned was named I-Want-A-Snack-Mom let me run around my tank for the whole night.  I was a little stressed from my big move, so I was glad they didn’t try to pick me up up up.  They didn’t take me out of my tank until the next morning.  I got to explore my new home a little more and that made me happy happy happy.

So far their cat, No-No-Chewie doesn’t seem too bad and I’m getting comfortable in my new home.  No-No-Chewie mostly just walks around the house and looks at me curiously while I roll around in my ball - which is my favorite favorite favorite thing to do.

The only sad sad sad thing is that I miss all of my wonderful friends from school.  I have been able to see a few of them already though!

Miss Stella feeds me my yummy food every night and changes my water.  The whole family likes to come watch me run run run on my wheel and scurry around my tank.  They also take me out to roam around the house in my ball a lot.

I was scared to move at first, but I really like like like my new home home home.  Yes yes yes I do do do.  Today is a good day and my new family really loves loves loves me.
